Ask Carley: Bonding with a future mother-in-law
Monday, August 18, 2008

Q: I want to invite my fiance's mother to go gown shopping with my mom and me. Would that be too awkward?

A: It sounds like you will make a wonderful daughter-in-law, as you are already so considerate of your future mother-in-law's (FMIL) feelings.

Consider your relationship. Have you become close in the time you've dated her son? Have you done things together, such as shop or have lunch, without your fiance there?

Just be aware that the dress-buying process is conducive to stress, and you should only bring along those whose opinions you value and trust. If she's this type of person, then certainly ask her to join you. If nothing else, she will certainly appreciate the offer. However, if you're worried about not being able to spend the one-on-one time with your mom, try to include your FMIL in other aspects of the planning. Even a simple coffee date is a great way to bond and help her feel involved, too.
